Carl is a joiner by trade, but following the death of his father – who he’d looked after for the last ten years of his life – was experiencing a difficult period in his own life, and felt very low.
Carl was referred to Good Work by his mental health practitioner and spent time with Employment Specialist, Anya, exploring his work preferences, improving his confidence, self-esteem and uncovering what he had forgotten about his own brilliant personality.
Carl decided that he didn’t want to return to work as a joiner, and spent sessions with Anya writing a new CV, speaking about strengths, transferable skills and linked those to a variety of jobs. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Carl and Anya communicated over the phone, and together they searched the internet for job vacancies.
Carl had limited PC and research skills but did have good telephone skills, so, playing to Carl’s strengths, Anya encouraged him to contact employers directly about current vacancies – this gave him the opportunity to introduce and talk about himself.
Together, Carl and Anya identified a top three list of jobs Carl would like, and then created a script to help his nerves on the phone. After only the first phone call Carl was asked to visit the construction site for an informal interview.
Carl wowed them with his personality and was offered a job soon after. He’s now very happy in his new role as a Cleaning Operative.
